Personalized Math Prototype
Objectives:

Learn about Matific and get set up.

Implement Matific with your students during online learning time.

Use Matific reports to inform instruction and small group time.

Require students to complete a Mastery Task before moving on to the next learning objective.
Suggested Timeline: 1 week
Stage 4:
Matific Online Math Games
Objective 1: Overview and Set Up

Step 1: Watch the Matific introductory video at right.

Step 2: Create your Matific teacher account.
-
Step 3: Register your class. Go to Teacher Resources, Tutorials and watch: Class Registration.
Note: If students are using tablets, you will need to download the Matific app:

Step 4: Find and assign activities.

Watch the video at right to learn how to find and assign aligned activities.

Assign 2-5 activities to your class.

Step 5: Add Matific activities to your playlist.
-
Copy the assigned activity names to your playlist. See an example playlist of Khan Academy and Matific activites, which can be copied and modified.

Students will spend 30 minutes of their 90 minutes online learning time on Matific per week.

Pace: Assign an additional week of Matific activities and allow students to move ahead.
Objective 2: Implement Matific with Students

Math Notebook: Have students draw and label a conceptual representation of each Matific game.

Learning Partners: Pair students up as “Learning Partners” to work in tandem on separate devices, check-in and answer quick clarifying questions along the way.

Step 1: In Matific, there are four simple reports. Select reports at the top after logging in, to view them. The Class performance overview, pictured below, is the most helpful report.

Objective 3: Use Matific Data Reports to Inform Instruction

Click on a piece of the pie chart and it will show which students are Advanced, On Level, Need Practice or Intervention.

Note: To generate a parent report, go to your Students in the top right menu.

Check the box next to the student name and select parent report.

Enter the parent email and select Preview to see what you will be emailing to parents.

Considerations for More Personalized Learning:

Parent Reports: Create Parent Reports in Matific to communicate progress and give students additional practice time playing Matific games. See a sample Parent Report.

Tip: A nice feature of the parent report is that all activities in the selected time frame are listed with active links. Students can get additional practice by clicking on activities from the parent report.

Step 2: Use the Matific data to inform your small groups.

Those students that Need Practice or Intervention should be given additional support.
-
Have students use math manipulatives in small groups to demonstrate the concept portrayed with virtual manipulatives in the Matific game(s).

Khan Academy Option: Once a student has finished a large portion of the playlist, the teacher will recommend the student completes additional problems in Khan related to the target objectives. See how to make a coach recommendation in Khan.
Performance Activity Option: Assign students another performance task, similar to the one completed in the group activity. If there were multiple group activity options, students can pick from the remaining options for their Mastery Task. See this sample playlist.
Matific Option: Unlock the worksheets in Matific that go with that week’s skills. They can be done digitally or printed with or without answers; see an example. These worksheets can essentially be used as quizzes. All have 18 problems and 4 different versions with different problems. If completed on paper you can see student work and evaluate their mistakes.

Objective 4: Create and Assign a Mastery Task

Step 1: Now that you've implemented all centers, you can create and assign a Mastery Task using any of the center activities. Instead of creating your own quiz, below are three options for students to demonstrate mastery. Select one or a combination of more than one:

Step 2: On the fifth day of the learning cycle, plan to have all students work on completing their assigned mastery task by the end of the period.
