OUSD School Transformation Collaborative:
Spring 2017 Cohort

Personalized Math Prototype
Objectives:
-
Find and assign a multi-step, applied Group Performance Activity.
-
Create a schedule that rotates students between Khan Academy, Group Performance Activities and Small Groups.
-
Incorporate problem solving into the Mastery Task.
Suggested Timeline: 1 week
Stage 3:
Group Performance Activities
-
Step 1: Use your own curriculum or the list below to find Common Core aligned word problems or performance tasks that apply foundational knowledge and develop higher order problem solving skills.
-
Students will work in groups for two full periods a week using the Math Collaboration Guide
-
Each activity should take one class period to complete, so plan two group activities per week.
-
Plan for having homework or independent work available if groups finish early.
-
Objective 1: Plan Group Performance Activities
Resources for Group Performance Activities
-
Step 2: Introduce students to a Group Performance Activity.
-
Deconstruct one activity as a whole class.
-
Walk students through the process of the Math Collaboration Guide.
-
Have students work in assigned groups on a Group Performance Activity for the remainder of class.
-
Considerations for More Personalized Learning:
-
Path: Find two or three differentiated Group Performance Activities at different levels and assign to meet the needs of each group.
Objective 2: Create Learning Activity Schedule
-
Step 1: Create a four-day schedule for the Group Performance Activity, Online Learning, and Small Group Instruction using a spreadsheet.
-
See the the second Tab in the Group Scheduling Template, which you used in Stage 2. You can copy and modify.
-
For each student group, the schedule assumes 30 minutes of small group instruction, 90 minutes of online learning, and 120 minutes of group work time across 4 days. If you chose to change the time allotments, you should make sure each student subgroup gets an equitable amount time with each learning activity.
-

-
Step 2: Print and display a student friendly (i.e. levels not visible) version of your weekly learning schedule for all student subgroups.
Objective 3: Add Problem Solving to the Mastery Task
-
Step 1: The Mastery Task should include problem solving similar to the group performance activity. Use a combination of options below.
-
Option 1: Create your own quiz incorporating word problems.
-
Option 2: Pull an additional Performance Activity to be done individually (similar to Group Activity).
-
Option 3: Use Khan Academy Coach Recommendations to assign more practice problems to students.
-
-
Step 2: On the fifth day of the learning cycle, plan to have all students work on completing their assigned mastery task by the end of the period.
