OUSD School Transformation Collaborative:
Spring 2017 Cohort

Personalized Math Prototype

Objectives:
-
Learn about Khan Academy and get set up.
-
Implement Khan with your students.
-
Learn to use Khan reports and make Coach Recommendations.
Suggested Timeline: 1 week
Stage 1:
Khan Academy
Note: This module could be modified to implement a different adaptive math program if desired.
-
Step 1: If you are not familiar with Khan Academy, watch the two minute video at right.
-
Step 2: Become familiar with the Practice Tasks, Levels and Mastery Challenges in Khan Academy.
-
Step 3: Set up your teacher account by visiting Khan Academy and following the prompts.
Objective 1: Set Up Khan Academy
-
Step 4: Create a class. (Note: Students will be added later.)
-
Step 5: Create a Playlist of Khan Academy Practice Tasks and Videos for the next two weeks.
-
Copy and paste the skills from your unit in Khan (or use this standards-aligned spreadsheet).
-
Note: Practice tasks can be completed without watching the videos. The teacher will have to decide if they will assign videos on their list or allow students to choose to watch videos as needed.
-
See an example Khan Academy Playlist.
-
-
-
Step 6: Watch this Video from KIPP Academy to get a feel for how Khan Academy can be used in class.
Note: If students are using tablets, you will need to download the Khan app:
-
For more help, see the complete list of Khan Academy how-to guides.
Objective 2: Implement Khan Academy in the Classroom
-
Step 1: Add students to your class.
-
Tip: It is easiest to have students add themselves to your class using your class code (See Option 3). Use this handout with students. If students have never used Khan Academy they will first need to sign up for an account.
-
Note: Students who are too young for email will need you to create their account, or you may have them use their google apps accounts if you are a GAFE school.
-
-
Step 2: Introduce students to Khan Academy with the 2 minute video from above. Important: You will assign the grade level mission for students, so start the video at 21 seconds.
-
Explain how to navigate and search for content.
-
Demonstrate the use of Videos and Hints.
-
Considerations for More Personalized Learning:
-
Pace: Allow students to complete additional Khan Academy tasks that they add to the bottom of the Playlist you created in Objective 1.
-
Allow students to move ahead to week 2 of the Playlist to accommodate their pace in Khan.
-
Learning Partners: Pair students up as “Learning Partners” to work in tandem on separate devices in Khan Academy. While students can work at their own pace, the learning partner is there to check-in and answer quick clarifying questions along the way.
-
Step 3: Have students complete the “Mission Warm-Up.” (NOTE: If they have used Khan before, have them complete a mastery challenge or a practice task in place of the Warm-Up.)
-
Provide the unit-aligned Playlist of Khan activities for the next two weeks (developed in Objective 1 above). Students should have 90 minutes of Khan Academy time for the week.
-
Depending on your student to device access, have all students use Khan Academy at the same time or have students take turns.
-
Clearly communicate Khan Academy performance expectations (Practiced Level or above).
-
Have students submit their daily progress on a google form or chart to track your class.
-
-
Step 4: Have students keep a math notebook to take notes on Khan videos, show work and later bring to teacher small group time. See this detailed example from a 6th grade teacher.
-
Videos and Hints: It is important to explicitly teach students how to use the videos and hints. They may not understand how they can pause, play and replay videos and use hints to best meet their learning needs. In any Khan video, select Options to select the playback speed or an interactive transcript, which may be helpful to some students.
Objective 3: Use Reports to Make Recommendations
-
Step 1: Once there is data in Khan Academy, teach students how to evaluate their progress.
-
Step 2: By the end of the week, make Coach Recommendations for all students.
-
Access your coach Dashboard, by clicking on your username and selecting, “Your Students.”
-
Use the data from the Skill Progress Report to see how students performed. (You will learn more about reports in Stage 2.)
-
Follow the steps here to make Coach Recommendations.
-
Important Note: To see Coach Recommendations, student must login and go to Progress.
-
Considerations for More Personalized Learning:
-
Motivation: Use a poster to show how many mission-level skills each student has mastered. Each week, let students give a shout-out for accomplishments. Use your Student Progress report in Khan Academy to keep the poster up to date. Example Poster to download.
