Personalized Math Prototype

Top
Objectives:
  1. Use data to determine how you will group and schedule students.
  2. Plan and implement small group instructional time.
  3. Require students to complete a Mastery Task to demonstrate mastery of the focus objectives for the week.

Suggested Timeline: 1 week

Stage 2:

Data Driven Small Groups

Note: This module could be modified to implement a different adaptive math program if desired.

Implementation

  • Step 1: Review data from the last week in the Skill Progress Report, which is accessed through the Dashboard. To access your coach Dashboard, click on your username, select “Your Students.”

    • Use the Quickstart Guide to learn about the Khan Academy levels (Struggling through Mastered) and how to filter report data.

Objective 1: Using Data to Group and Schedule Students

  • Step 2: Divide students into groups of 4-6 students. As much as possible, group students by their Khan proficiency level from the previous week's learning objective.

    • Using the Math Small Group Scheduling Template (make a copy), input students' levels from Khan Academy.

    • On the Learning Groups tab, assign each student to a group with 4-6 other students that are approximately at their level. The math period will be split into two sessions so that you can meet with two small groups every day.

Remember, students

take Challenges to level up to Mastered over time.

  • Step 4: Print and display a student friendly (i.e. levels not visible) version of your weekly learning schedule for all student subgroups.

Objective 2: Plan for Small Group Instruction

  • Step 1: Plan your small group instruction approach for each subgroup.

    • Small group instruction time should be tailored to the needs of each group. In general, it should not be a simple re-teach, but rather an effort to deepen understanding.

    • Review the objectives that each group is struggling with the most, and make this the focus of your small group time.

    • Prepare what your instructional approach (remediate, re-inforce, enrich) will be for each group.

      • Note: While you work with small groups the rest of class will work on Khan Academy or other independent work.

  • Step 2: To measure the effectiveness of your small group time, plan on administering a quick exit question related to your focus objective.

  • Step 3: Plan for one or more of your students to serve as classroom aids or monitors to ensure that the rest of the students do not get off task while you are working with small groups.

Considerations for More Personalized Learning:

  • People: If students need additional small group instruction beyond what was scheduled, they can request it via a clipboard or an online form, which the teacher reviews daily. Peer tutors could also be used.

  • Step 4: Communicate student expectations for small group time.

    • Start the week by letting students know what to expect in small groups.

    • Have students bring their Khan Academy Notebook that you set up in Stage 1 (detailed example) to take notes and complete Small Group practice work and their exit question.

Objective 3: Create and Assign a Mastery Task

  • Step 1: Create a Mastery Task or quiz for students to demonstrate they have mastered this week's objectives before moving onto the next week's list of objectives.

    • Option 1: Create your own quiz to use as a Mastery Task.

    • Option 2: Use Coach Recommendations that you learned about in Stage 1, and simply assign Khan tasks as your Mastery Tasks. Tip: When assigning Coach Recommendations, you can vary the number of required consecutive correct responses to 2, 3 or 5 so if you are using multiple tasks, it's not overwhelming to students.

  • Step 2: On the fifth day of the learning cycle, plan to have all students work on completing their assigned mastery task by the end of the period.

Congratulations! You've completed Stage 2. Move on to Stage 3: Adding Group Performance Activities.
