Objective 2: Brainstorm Prototype Features

Description:

For this objective you will complete two tasks in order to define the core ideas of your prototype. Give yourself a 60 minutes to complete this objective.

  • Task 2A: Brainstorm ideas for how to address your design challenge

  • Task 2B: Synthesize your brainstorm into 3-5 core ideas

Task 2A: Brainstorm ideas for how to address your design challenge

As a team:

  • Find an open space to brainstorm and post your ideas on a wall. Grab 2-3 pieces of chart paper and some post-its.

  • Post up your design challenge ("How might we"...) in a visible place

  • Read and reflect on the rules of effective brainstorming:

One conversation at a time             Encourage radical ideas             Build Off Each Other

Defer Judgement                            Stay on Topic                              Be Concise

As a team:

  • Start your timed 15-min brainstorm. Your goal is too generate ideas that answer your design challenge.

  • Write your ideas on post-its as they come to mind, share it aloud with the group, then post it on the wall.

  • Try to build off the ideas of others as they are posted (e.g. "yes, and")

  • After about 15 minutes, step back, review, start to group similar ideas.

  • If desired, do another timed 10-min brainstorm to build on any additional ideas that come to mind

Task 2B: Synthesize your brainstorm into 3-5 core ideas for your prototype

Step 2

Step 1

Step 1

Step 2

As a team:

  • Give each team member 3 dot stickers

  • Have each team member pick 3 ideas they would like to include in the prototype

As a team:

  • Review the 3-5 ideas that received the most dot votes.

  • As a group, decide which of these ideas would make sense to include in your prototype. The ideas you select should address your design challenge and complement each other.

  • Write down your final Prototype Features on 3-5 large post-it notes and place it on your poster labeled "Prototype Features".
